Pope names new auxiliary bishop for Archdiocese of Los Angeles

Pope Francis today named Msgr. Alejandro “Alex” Aclan Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The Holy Father has also named Auxiliary Bishop Joseph V. Brennan, for the San Fernando Region of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, as Bishop of Fresno. The appointments were announced in Washington, D.C. at 3 a.m. PST by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Bishop-elect Aclan will serve alongside the other four active auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles under Archbishop José H. Gomez. This appointment makes Bishop-elect Aclan the second Filipino-American priest to be named bishop in the U.S.

Archbishop Gomez will address the new appointments and present the newly named auxiliary bishop today, Tuesday, March 5, at 10 a.m., inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 555 W. Temple Street, downtown LA. Bishop-elect Aclan will be available for media interviews following the announcement.

“Bishop-elect Aclan is a man of prayer and he has a true heart for Jesus — and a deep concern for the people he is called to serve,” said Archbishop Gomez. “And I know he will be a voice for Filipino Catholics, who are a beautiful sign of growth and renewal in our Church here in Los Angeles and throughout the country.”
