Saturday Show: Faith and Broadcast Journalism Profession

Don’t miss Saturday’s live, call-in radio show, The Catholic Business Hour, when host Dick Lyles interviews three-time Emmy Award winning broadcast journalist Jim Newman.

A lifelong Catholic, Mr. Newman’s journalism career spans three decades and includes his most recent work on KABC-TV in Los Angeles, where he provided insightful financial information on the morning, midday and 5:00pm newscasts of Eyewitness News. Jim was lured to ABC7 from KTLA-TV in Los Angeles where he was the station’s business reporter. Prior to KTLA, Jim worked for ABC-TV where he was Business Week Magazine’s TV correspondent. Before that he was heard on both the NBC and CBS Radio Networks.

He was also the economics editor for the Associated Press in Washington, D.C. A former president of the Economic Broadcasters Association, he is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the Overseas Press Club. Jim is the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Janus Award for Excellence in Financial Broadcasting, the Overseas Press Club Award for International Business Reporting, is a two-time winner of the Los Angeles Press Club’s “Business News Reporter of the Year” and has three Emmys for TV reporting.

Quoted by a former U.S. Treasury Secretary as “an extremely capable and thoughtful member of the Fourth Estate,” Newman has been recognized by New York University for his contributions to business journalism. He also taught a class on Business Reporting at the University of Southern California. He has a solid understanding of the global economy, including the financial districts of Europe and the Orient.

He attended the Economic Summit meetings in Europe, filing live reports from France and Germany, as well as from Mexico and Canada. He has also reported on the economic outlooks in Australia, China and Japan. A connoisseur of classical music, Newman was one of the official spokesmen for the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Jim also appears seasonally with the Boston Pops at their Holiday Concert.

He is on the board for the Stroke Association of Southern California, and on the Board of Trustees for St. Anne’s. He has had four horse races named after him at Hollywood Park. An avid traveler, he makes frequent trips to Europe and Southeast Asia. When he finds time to relax, Newman loves to spend time with horses and catch a rare glimpse of his favorite soccer team from Scotland, the Glasgow Rangers. Catch the radio show, live, on the EWTN global Catholic radio network, which includes 130 AM/FM stations nationwide, online and on Sirius Channel 160.

The show airs Saturdays, 11-Noon EST (8-9 AM PST) .
