Sixty-four year old Sister Joseph Marie Ruessmann, of Alma, Michigan died Thursday night from injuries sustained from a hit-and-run car accident. She was riding her bike Thursday morning near a convent when the hit and run occurred. Sister Joseph Marie, whose birth name is Madeleine Ruessmann, was found lying on the side of the road, her bicycle close by. She was still alive and she was rushed to the hospital, but died later in the day.
Even sadder than the accident and death of a beloved religious sister was the reality that many cars drove by and did not stop to help the fallen nun.
Delores Gardner and her husband drove by at around 7:20 a.m. It was daylight.
“We thought she was dead when we seen her,” Delores said.
“I seen five cars roll by me, no one stopped and didn’t check on the person, driving right by, which shocks me, how can somebody just leave a human on the side of the road?” Delores said.
