Book Review: To Weep Like Mary: The Extraordinary Gift of the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows, by Wincenty Laszewski
As someone deeply familiar with the Marian apparitions at Medjugorje, I was fascinated to discover through this book the lesser-known apparitions in Kibeho, Rwanda (1981-1989), where Our Lady, calling herself “The Mother of the Word”, appeared weeping and urging devotion to
the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows.
This was entirely new to me, as was this unique form of the Holy Rosary. Reading Wincenty Laszewski’s beautiful and deeply spiritual book—To Weep Like Mary: The Extraordinary Gift of the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows— opened a door for me to an extraordinary form of contemplation that feels profoundly relevant for our times.
Laszewski, a Polish theologian renowned for his works on Marian devotion, leads readers through both the historical and spiritual dimensions of Kibeho. He explains how the Virgin Mary taught the visionary Marie Claire Mukangango this special rosary, promising grace and conversion to those who pray it sincerely.
What are the Seven Sorrows of Mary?
Each of the Seven Sorrows invites meditation on Mary’s participation in Christ’s Life and Passion:
- The Prophecy of Simeon
- The Flight into Egypt
- The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple
- Mary Meets Jesus Carrying the Cross
- Mary Stands at the Foot of the Cross
- Mary Receives the Body of Jesus
- The Burial of Jesus
Through these seven sorrows, Laszewski helps the reader cultivate the “skill of contemplating suffering”- seeing it not as chaos, but as a source of redemptive meaning, “like scattered filings drawn to the order of a magnet.”
The book provides an historical and spiritual account of the Apparitions at Kibeho as well as a prayer guide and invitation to deeper intimacy with Mary and her Son.
For anyone interested in Marian apparitions or in developing a richer, more meditative prayer life, this book is both enlightening and transformative — a true gift of grace and peace.
