In a world where many people long for the presence of a strong and faithful father, God has given the Church a powerful spiritual father in Saint Joseph.
When the fullness of time came, God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world through Mary. Yet God also desired that His Son would grow up with the care of an earthly father. He chose Saint Joseph to be the husband of Mary and the foster father of Jesus Christ.
Joseph, like Mary, had his own Annunciation moment. In a dream, an angel appeared to him: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife…She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus.” (Matthew 1:20-21)
Joseph awoke and immediately did as the Lord commanded.
Joseph is silent in Scripture, but through his shining obedience, humility, and perseverance, he became the faithful guardian of the Holy Family and a model for all families today. He continues to help us from Heaven with his powerful prayers.
In the days leading up to his feast, Our Sisters pray the Litany of St. Joseph. Here are a few of his titles we pray:
- Spouse of the Mother of God
- Zealous protector of Christ
- Head of the Holy Family
- Joseph, most obedient
- Glory of family life
- Cornerstone of families
- Support in difficulties
- Hope of the sick
- Terror of demons
- Protector of the Holy Church
We encourage you to pray for fathers everywhere, that they, like St. Joseph, they may look to God for guidance and strength and serve as faithful models of virtue for their families.
