Book Review: The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy not Time

By K.A. Walker

As we start this new year, I cannot recommend this book enough—The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz.

As you probably know, Jim Loehr is a remarkable human performance psychologist, author of 17 books (so far), the founder several performance systems and coaching centers for professional athletes and also for those seeking business and personal performance improvement.  Tony Schwartz is president and founder of The Energy Project.

At the time this particular book was written, Jim and Tony had developed and fine-tuned their Full Engagement(R) Training System. Their system is grounded in their 25 years working with Top athletes, including tennis champion Monica Seles and speed-skating gold medalist Dan Jansen, to name a few, to help them perform more effectively under brutal competitive pressures.

This book, however, is practical and all the recommendations are scientifically based techniques for managing your energy more effectively.

Essentially it gives the reader a roadmap — a proven successful roadmap that’s been used for more than 25 years with Top Athletes to gain an edge in their performance.  As the publisher’s description puts it, this book “is a roadmap to become more physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused and spiritually aligned – both on and off the job.”

I concur wholeheartedly.

I plan to re-read it this month, and encourage you to consider doing the same.  Why not fine-tune our efforts to make the best and most effective use of our time and energy in 2026, regardless of what comes our way unexpectedly?!  Feel free to send us your feedback along the way!
