I knew Marin through her dad, Matt, and granddad, Ed. For more than a decade Ed, as a senior account rep for Merrill Lynch, handled the financial assets of a company for which I was CEO. Later, he worked with me on an entrepreneurial project called “Keepers,” for those who wore reading glasses. Ed passed away in Napa several years ago, but his big Irish grin and compassion for others will never be forgotten. Neither will the story of his remarkable young grand-daughter, Marin.
Ed’s son, Matt, is an on-air sportscaster who has worked for CNN and Fox and as a sports executive with the Seattle Mariners, and who is currently a news writer/producer at KGO-TV ABC 7 (San Francisco) and writer for the Marin Press-Democrat newspaper. But nothing in his career could have prepared him for the inspirational leadership of his young athlete daughter, Marin, who—as a star competitive swimmer on track for the Olympics—developed a fatal brain cancer. She was still in high school.
Marin’s bout with brain cancer and her determination to swim in the para-Olympics (Beijing) is rivetting and inspirational. And it needs to be shared with a broader audience than friends and family. Culling from his seasoned sports journalism expertise, Matt has nearly completed writing his book on Marin—written only as a sportscaster dad who traveled every step of the journey with his daughter and family could tell it—and he is now raising money to have it professionally edited and published.
Just days away from a mid-July deadline, Matt is very close to achieving his goal. But as those of you who have ever used KickStarter to raise funds know well, you cannot receive any of the funds unless you are able to raise the entire amount. Matt is so close to his goal, with just days left. Let’s see what we can do to help him across the finish line…
Please take a look at the short video that Matt posted on Kickstarter (click here) and share this
with your friends. Any contribution, large or small, to move this project forward would be greatly appreciated—by Marin’s family, friends, and most of all by those who will ultimately see this production and read this book.
This is a project that is near and dear to my heart. I can’t personally thank you enough for any help you feel inspired to give.
