This book is AWESOME & COMPELLING!!! You can’t put it down! author Evelyn Waugh is author of Brideshead Revisited (which I never read) but he has a gift for story-telling. I rarely read books more than once, but this book I have read more than twice. Each time I see something new. It is utterly inspiring and REAL!

Architecture in Communion, (1998, Ignatius Press) written by Steven Schloeder, Ph.D., should be required reading by seminary students, clergy and laity throughout the United States. Dr. Schloeder expertly develops the road map for the implementation of the Second Vatican Council’s direction of sacred art and architecture in the Catholic Church in the United States.
Often texts on Catholic Church art and architecture advocate a complete disassociation with the traditional and functional roles that art and architecture have played throughout the history of Catholicism. What is remarkable about this treatise is the intimate association between sacred art and Catholic worship. The examples highlighted in the book are tangible examples of artistic and architectural continuity that compliment the role and purpose of the Church, as the sacred place for the celebration of the Eucharist, the Sacraments, and as the gathering of the People of God.
Catholic churches built in the last half of the 20th century in the U.S. were often built in anticipation of a “multi-purpose,” space that fulfills social, communal and liturgical functions for a nascent parish. However, Dr. Schroeder’s Architecture in Communion illustrates that we need to return to the realization that a Catholic church is primarily a place for God’s dwelling and our worship of Him.
Dr. Schloeder illustrates through a historical and theological perspective the goal of incorporating ancient signs and symbols into a vibrant and living 21st century Church. Most poignantly throughout the book, the author shows us that in addition to being mortar and brick construction, the Catholic Church is really a magnificent assembly of “living stones,” namely the Catholic faithful that join together to celebrate the Paschal Mystery in monuments of living faith that is best expressed by the axiom,”Lex Orandi, Lex credendi.”
While the book was published over 10 years ago, this reviewer strongly feels it has not yet been fully appreciated or yet understood by neither the ecclesical community nor the artistic and architectural subcultures. However, this book as previously indicated should constitute a required text for every Catholic that wants to glorify God in our Catholic art and architecture. The historical illustrations coupled with the pragmatic recommendations for designing a 21 century Domus Ecclessiae are critical insights that hopefully ignite Catholic building professionals, parishioners and clergy a renewed vision of Catholic art and architecture as envisioned by Vatican II. The interpretation of Vatican II’s desire to revive a dynamic and qualitative artistic movement in the Church reflects clearly the artistic and theological continuity that is sometimes missing in our liturgical design and implementation.
Architecture in Communion deserves a place of prominence in every Catholics’ theological resources library.
Hugh McNichol is a freelance writer and educator based in Wilmington, Delaware. He grew up in the Gray’s Ferry section of South Philadelphia and studied philosophy and theology at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia. He believes that the future of Catholicism in the U.S. is in the hands of those who are willing to “practice and believe” in the Gospel message.
This is one of my all-time favorite and most inspiring books! I had the privilege of meeting Fr. Cisek while in college and never forgot it! He looked like a short Spencer Tracy and was a down-to-earth person. But prior to meeting him, I had read his book, this book, and its gripping first-hand story strongly influenced me. His missionary enthusiasm evolved into missionary courage, and his eventual long nightmare in a Soviet Russian prison echoed the kinds of inner questions and resolutions that any of us would probably have if in the same circumstances. But what I consider to be the most poignant part of the book–his utter and complete surrender to God after a capitulation to what he did not believe in, changed my inner life and expanded my faith in God’s loving hand, no matter what our circumstances. I have read this book three times and recommend it to you … It is a story of profound, accessible, life-transforming HOPE. Enjoy, Embrace! And READ!

PRI Mourns the Passing ofPRI Mourns the Passing of Father Paul Marx, our Founder and Chairman
Dear Friend of Father Marx,
It grieves me to tell you that Father Paul Marx, OSB, my mentor and spiritual Father, went to his reward this morning, March 20, at 8:30 a.m.
Father Marx touched my life in many ways—he helped to bring me into the Catholic Church, he founded the Population Research Institute and served as its long-time Chairman, and he did me the honor of allowing me to work alongside him in defending Life.
At the time of his death, Father was living at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, where he was ordained to the priesthood the year I was born.
Father’s wake will be held Thursday, March 25, at the St. John’s Abbey Church in Collegeville, Minnesota. The funeral Mass will be on Friday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m. Central Time. I know that many of you will want to attend.
If you are not able to be physically present for the funeral Mass, I hope that you will join me at that hour in pausing to say a prayer for the repose of Father Marx’s soul.
You see, at that hour I will be attending a closed-door meeting at the Vatican on behalf of the unborn. I know that Father would want me to go, even under these sad circumstances. You see, he told me so.
It was Father’s final wish that the baby-saving work of PRI continue at full speed, with absolutely no interruption.
So I will miss the funeral of the Apostle of Life—as Pope John Paul II called him—on instructions from the Apostle of Life.
But there are consolations.
On Palm Sunday, I will be able to pray for the repose of his soul at the High Papal Mass at St. Peter’s.
And there is this: I am told by those at his bedside that, at the moment of his death, Father raised his arms towards Heaven and said, “Take me home.”
Thus passed Father peacefully and joyfully into the hands of his Savior.
May we all, in honor of this great Apostle of Life, redouble our efforts on behalf of God’s little ones.
Also, please know that you were remembered daily in Father Marx’s prayers and Masses.
And I know that he still remembers you today, in the presence of Our Lord and the Queen of Heaven.
Yours in Christ,
Steven W. Mosher

But I haven’t read it yet.
Worth reading, though.
Love your point of view. I agree completely. I think the sticking point for most bosses will be the willingness to appear less than perfect. They would need to be highly self aware and truly confident. I’m sure there are many out there that are…I’ve only worked for 3.

This is a terrible idea
This is a very bad idea. The idea that someone who is accustomed to working for a salary that finds themselves unemployed should plunk down their life savings on a patent that venture capitalists, and a whole host of others who actually have expertise AND experience at turning ideas into commercial successes have already passed on is the most risk laden, almost sure to fail idea I’ve heard yet. A franchise is a much less risky option than trying to buy a patent for someone who has no entrepreneurial experience. Our American culture idolizes the successful risk taker, but the truth is that most fail. If you want to keep your committments to God and family, work your rear-end off to find another job and save your money responsibly rather than betting it all on black which is what this seems to suggest. The truth is that you’ll likely end up with no savings or worse, no savings, debt, and still no income.
It’s all about good management
Jim Collins makes the point that the difference between matched pairs of companies is the quality of their management teams. When deciding on which company will win in a market, the one with the better management team will have the higher likelihood of winning.
An absolute must-have book for Catholic business professional
I can’t rate this book highly enough.
Napa Institute “East”
“It was the leaderships hope that meetings like these would be offered throughout the United States, making them available to an ever-growing audience seeking a deeper understanding of the truth behind the Catholic Faith, and emboldening them to live and defend their faith wherever they live and work.”
I think that Vero Beach, on the east coast of Florida, would make an excellent venue for a “Napa Institute East”. Vero Beach is a beautiful seaside community, with no high rises and little traffic. It is midway between Jacksonville and Miami. It is a hidden jewel of a town.
There is such a great need to prepare people for the challenges that Catholics and our Church are experiencing and will continue to experience in the coming years. It is wonderful to see the kind of topics and speakers as those represented at the 2012 Napa Institute Conference.
It is wonderful that the Napa Institute exists. Hopefully, it will expand to allow more Catholics to be able to participate. People are hungry for the kind of information and faith opportunities that will enable them to be capable and worthy “Catholics in the Next America”.
To please, or not
I couldn’t agree with you more, Kathy. You know, recently I started sponsoring in RCIA again, after having been away from the program for some years. I’m gratefully and happily passionate about our Faith and doing what’s required to evangelize and spread the good news.
Much to my surprise, one individual initially labeled me “teachers pet” and another coughed almost uncontrollably as I shared a faith story. Kathy, we as Christians, have and will be a persecuted people… even within our own church occassionally. However the deriding comments and behaviors are actually a wonderful confirmation that we ARE on the right path! They are “curbs” that we might “bump” on the eternal road, the river of light.
I will never, ever apologize for my enthusiasm and may the good Lord continue to bless all of those who need encouragement when The Spirit moves them to share our faith.

Very true comments; good article. To make up/ combat against the ongoing federal administration, and the culture at large, we cannot act as most have been over the past 20+ years. If we do, the national issues
will multiply and we may get to a point where things are unfixable.

Fr. Pavone’s Open Letter to Barack Hussein Obama
Well stated Fr. Pavone. It’s nice to see church leaders like you taking a partisan, principled stance on critical issues such as life and marriage. Jesus was certainly partisan when it came to doctrines, and he was only egalitarian when it came to the way he treated repentant people.
Not sure capitalism is capable of being baptized. It’s roots grew outside of the Church, and in the hands of progressive thinkers or conservative atheist it will be corrupted. I have found distributism to be the best model for a small business to sign on to, although difficult in practice without societal support. Strangely enough a type of distributism has been spawned by the liberal movement in america in agriculture business.

Selling Christian Style – yay!
Thank you so much! I have terific services for medical and dental health and most the marketing seminars and motovational speakers propound the “Think and Grow Rich” self actualation format. Of course these aren’t Christian. Further, some claim to be Christians and yet they also give this same philosophy of dream it and make it happen.
I will certainly get your book and read it. I had given up even looking at the presentations, as I began to wonder if they were becoming an occasion of sin.
I placed my business in the hands of Our Lady of Good Success at the outset, but still working to succeed.
Again thanks, once I read the book, you may hear from me again.

My name is Thomas Coleman, I am a 28 year old concept manager for the Awareness, Science and Patient Advocacy Group, Stem Cells Cure. It is a fact that public knowledge of this field is dim and has been exploited to fuel an ideological agenda that wants the public to believe that it is the so called “religious right” that has intentionally hindered the advancement of medical science and modern cures. By keeping alive a controversy purely to stir up discontent and give blanket ignorant statements the ammunition to affect thought, what has happened is that the FACT that the major triumphs for medical science and humanity with the use of umbilical cord blood cells and marrow cells has gone almost completely unreported on by our mainstream media.

Fix the Bricks
The town’s actions seem heavy handed, but the CBJ underplays the severity od the deterioration of the building (it appears it could be a safety issue when you view the photo), and fails to note that the $10000 city charge to perform the repairs would be applied to his taxes.

When Bad Things Happen to Good People
Love your writing, Ric. Thank you for this and the other columns! The story reminded me of the great book by Rabbi Harold Kushner, “When Bad Things Happen to Good People.” Not exactly consonant with Catholic theology, the book is an outstanding read for anyone of any faith.
NOT ALL CALLS ARE THE CALL OF THE FATHER EVEN IN POVERTY
For some, it is the other way around. The economy changed their future to the extent that their homes were foreclosed on and investments lost. Out struggling to find employment, any nod to do anything is the direction they take in the hopes this is something God has in mind for them. But, there is the temptation to “decide” it is God’s call and a humbling necessary to learn how to follow him. Actually, it requires discernment. It may not be God’s call. Daily prayer is not sufficient to take away the effects of original sin and keep us from deciding what is and what is not from Him. It is unwise to “decide” that having blessings in life prior to the economic meltdown indicates some new calling. The call may just be to get back on that horse, sit high in the saddle, do as well if not better than before but recall the need to return that blessing to the community, the church, and maybe even one of your children in a hard way just now…and without using that generosity as a way to remind them how much you’ve done for them.
I am a bit confused, is this book available now? According to Amazon it will be delivered in 2015. Thanks.

Thank you for this change in
Thank you for this change in perspective! Our goal in prayer for others should be that they come to a place in their journey in life where they need to reach out to God and desire to draw near to Him. The witness of our lives along with us standing in the gap for them will offer the opportunity for them to be convicted of sin and desire to change because of the unconditional love of God they are beginning to experience through you and the circumstances you are praying for.

Thank you Karen for an insightful article about such a troubling topic in this time of our lives. It truly is unsettling to see the world being taken again by this same radical violence from Islam.

They funded a political Presidential campaign supportin abortion
I am Chilean, an observant catholic, and I want the best for our church.
Unofrtunately some people are using the name of our church and this organization to support presidential elections in a foreigner country (Chile). The Emeritus President Mario Paredes, using the name of “Catholic Association of Latino Leaders” oragnized activities to fund political presidency of Michelle Bachelet in Chile. She is agnostic and she faced other catholic candidats. Additionally it is unlaw to finance political actitivies with foreigner money in Chile.
But the most important part in that Bachelet is leading a left coalition which include the Comunist Party. They have send few weeks ago a new law to allow abortion in Chile. They funding and including as obligatory books to promote homosexualism in public schools and they are reforming all education systems to control catholic schools. Of course Chilean Catholic Church is against all this laws.
It is important to not be so candid about some catholic leader, because they are using us to promote leaders agaisnt God and our Church.
Please be aware.
Just read this…
Awesome. More, please!

thanks again for your thoughtful and thorough book reviews. I end up adding many of your recommendations to my library. This one will be the next one on the stack!
The Sacrament of Marriage
Recently, I met a rather young convert to the Catholic Church. She came from the Lutheran Church. She told me that she had gone to a catechism class at one of the Novus Ordo churches here in San Diego. We met in the parking lot at St. Anne’s Parish (a F.S.S.P. parish). The class at the Novus Ordo church taught very little about the faith, she said. And when she asked the instructor questions, the instructor would not answer. Maybe this is why so many so called Catholics are complacent with the wordly trends.
A lot has to be repaired in the Church. Time to get back to living the faith! “Soul that asketh understanding only thus can ye be blessed.” “God is all you can long for.”
These days we have resources to learn more about our Catholic faith and live it. But few seem to seek that. For starters, it will be awesome for couples to recieve the sacrament of marriage! (vs the worldly confusion of our times).
Don Bosco relic
I have a relic of Don Bosco given to me back in the late 1950’s. I was only 8 or 9 yrs. old. My familly and relatives use to attend his feast at Don Bosco Seminary in Newton, NJ. where I recieved it. The relic is about 1/4″ square mounted in a case. I’ve often wondered what to do with it after all these years. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Entertaining and Educational
Excellent two-hanky movie for all to see. Top notch acting and production.
Approaches a good number of family issues we face in today’s world and educates viewers with excellent ways to take command of our lives.
Marxist Co-option of the Vatican Dates to 1846
With the election of Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti as Pope in 1846, taking the name Pius IX, the Vatican was co-opted at the top position by what would soon be known as a Marxist,* hence the embarrassing doctrinal edicts on the (1) Immaculate Conception (1854); and (2) Papal Infallibility (1870), both edicts** placing their respective subjects on an even level with God’s omniscience. In fact in 1858, just four-years after Pius IX declared Mary, mother of Jesus, to be without sin, Mary took time out from her busy schedule and came down to Earth, informing Bernadette Soubirous that she, Mary, was indeed the Immaculate Conception, born without sin! What marvelous timing!
Then in 1917 the Socialist (read: Marxist) government in Portugal, in co-operation with the Vatican, gave us the next fake Marian apparition where this time the mother of Jesus tells ten-year-old Lúcia Santos*** that if everyone prays to her, that is pray to Mary, then there won’t be an even more terrible war in the future…
“The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the Pontificate of Pius XI.”
Did you catch it? God isn’t omniscient in this Marxist drama, because Mary says there might be another war! That’s what happens when you leave it up to Marxists to write these scripts, they naturally get it all wrong due to their ignorance of theology, and in this instance forgetting that God is omniscient!
Mary continues, “To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred; the Holy Father will have much to suffer; various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she shall be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world.”
Note where Mary says, “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she shall be converted…”
Mary is telling us there’s no need to wage war against the USSR because the Marxists who control the USSR will magically convert to Russian Orthodoxy! Cleaver, huh? And what happened on December 26, 1991? Marxist Mary was right! Bolshevism collapsed, and Marxists magically became Christians!****
Marxists have planned schism for the Catholic Church. When schism does arrive for the Catholic Church, Marxists will naturally control both opposing entities. Marxists call this tactic of using false opposites the ‘Scissors Strategy’, in which the blades represent the two falsely opposed sides that converge on the confused victims, neutralizing true opposition to socialism, thereby allowing the advancement of socialism to the bewilderment of the true opposition. The Marxist pedophilia operation will be one means used by schism proponents to divide the Catholic Church.
The Vatican’s Marxist pedigree is further confirmed by its failure to alert the world that the ‘collapse’ of the USSR (and East Bloc nations) is a fraud, where KGB agents continue to control religion, as inadvertently confirmed by the so-called Files Commission in Bulgaria, an on-going government investigation into the inexplicable continuation of government salaries going to Communist era state security agents within religion,***** government, media, journalism, academia, etc. The Bulgarian government was forced into creating the Files Commission due to the publication of a best selling book observing the continued employment of Communist era collaborators. If it weren’t for that best selling book that opened this can of worms, there would be no such investigations of Communist era state security agents still on the government payroll, as confirmed by the dearth of such investigations in the other nations that comprised the East Bloc, including those nations that comprised the Soviet Union.
See my blog for footnotes, and more on this general subject of Marxist co-option of the West’s institutions…
The following is a discovery I made in April regarding the fake collapse of the USSR, and what that fraudulent collapse proves about the institutions of the West…
When Soviet citizens were liberated from up to 74 years of horrific Marxist oppression on December 26, 1991 there were ZERO celebrations throughout the USSR, proving (1) the ‘collapse’ of the USSR is a strategic ruse; and (2) the political parties of the West were already co-opted by Marxists,* otherwise the USSR (and East Bloc nations) couldn’t have gotten away with the ruse.
ZERO celebrations, as the The Atlantic article inadvertently informs us…
Notice, however, the Kremlin staged anti-government demonstrations that took place in Russia (and other Soviet republics) in the years immediately preceding the ‘collapse’, yet ZERO celebrations after the ‘collapse’!
For more on this discovery see my blog…
The fraudulent ‘collapse’ of the USSR (and East Bloc) couldn’t have been pulled off until both political parties in the United States (and political parties elsewhere in the West) were co-opted by Marxists, which explains why verification of the ‘collapse’ was never undertaken by the West, such verification being (1) a natural administrative procedure (since the USSR wasn’t occupied by Western military forces); and (2) necessary for the survival of the West. Recall President Reagan’s favorite phrase, “Trust, but verify”.
It gets worse–the ‘freed’ Soviets and West also never (1) de-Communized the Soviet Armed Forces of its Communist Party officer corps, which was 90% officered by Communist Party members; and (2) arrested/de-mobilized the 6-million vigilantes that assisted the Soviet Union’s Ministry of the Interior and police control the populations of the larger cities during the period of ‘Perestroika’ (1986-1991)!
There can be no collapse of the USSR (or East Bloc nations) without…
Verification, De-Communization and De-mobilization.
The West never verified the collapse of the USSR because no collapse occurred, since if a real collapse had occurred the West would have verified it, since the survival of the West depends on verification. Conversely, this proves that the political parties of the West were co-opted by Marxists long before the fraudulent collapse of the USSR, since the survival of the West depends on verification.
The West will form new political parties where candidates are vetted for Marxist ideology, the use of the polygraph to be an important tool for such vetting. Then the West can finally liberate the globe of vanguard Communism.

Tom Loarie review of “Disrupt yourself…”
A very useful alert to a thoughtful work on the challenges people facde in workplace transitions. the subject will ring true for anyone who has gone thru a major mid-career transition.
I respectfully, but strongly disagree with the assertion that Pope Francis’ speech to congress made it a great day to be a Catholic. Quite the opposite. Pope Francis has consistently denigrated Capitalism while promoting income redistribution and socialist principles. Capitalism has lifted more people out of poverty, while socialism is often antagonistic toward Christianity (consider Europe). He spoke of “hatred and brutal atrocities, committed even in the name of God and of religion.” without mentioning Islam, implying that Islam and Christianity (and all other religions, for that matter) are moral equivalents in regard to “brutal attrocities”. That’s utterly ridiculous, and misleading to the uninformed. On the day the Senate was scheduled to vote on whether or not to defund Planned Parenthood, with the horrific PP videos exposing the violence toward the unborn, Pope Francis vrtually ignored the abortion issue, instead making a strident pro-life appeal…to abolish the death penalty! The list goes on. For excellent analysis of the Pope’s speech to Congress, I encourage readers to check out this link: http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/09/24/pope-francis-slams-capitalism-death-penalty-immigration-law-no-real-mention-abortion-gay-marriage/

List By 2nd Vote
Just an FYI. The list of corporate donors to Planned Parenthood by 2nd Vote is horribly inaccurate. Some of the corporations they list simply do not support Planned Parenthood. It is important that prolife people be right when we make public statements or we will lose all credibility — with corporate leaders and the general public.
Boycott of Planned Parenthood Donors
I have been a supporter of Life Decisions International for 12 years. Their work is remarkably accurate and their style is both responsible and professional. I truly don’t know how they accomplish so much with so little funding.
LDI is one of the most effective pro-life organizations in the country, especially if one considers the amount of money raised and spent and the many victories realized.I greatly appreciate the time and effort they put into making the list of boycott targets one we can count on. (LDI’s boycott list includes all of the information needed to contact a corporation and a list of products/services offered by each corporation.)I am grateful for the well thought out process LDI uses before putting a company on its boycott list. They use uniform, clear and intelligent standards that are applied to every corporation.Thank you for promoting the list published by LDI. I have never been disappointed in their work and am happy for the opportunity to play a part in a project that has convinced hundreds of corporations to stop supporting Planned Parenthood. It is a success each participant can experience right away.Everyone who is serious about ending funding of Planned Parenthood should be participating in the boycott. The more who join in the fight the greater the number of victories to come.
Thanksgiving as it began
A fascinating and fun glimpse into the history of our most exhaustive eating adventure of the year!
Uniting others, besides Catholics to the Year of Mercy
I loved that video!!! That’s what we need – to be united in SERVICE and SOCIAL JUSTICE as a human family. I’m a practicing Catholic who loves the Church and Pope and it’s exciting to see so many other’s who are NOT Catholic encouraged to perform the Corporal Works. These are exciting times!
As a new member of a great Catholic non-profit, Santiago Retreat Center, I am so grateful that our year will be one focused on Mercy and that we live it as an organization! Thank you, Papa, for your inspiration.
Joe and his wife, Ann are my heroes. When we started our Massachusetts pregnancy center (Problem Pregnancy of Worcester, Inc.) in 1982, Joe was our first fundraising banquet speaker. It was held in a small K of C hall with 60 folks. We are 34 years old this year and Joe and Ann are a little older too. Great interview! Thanks.
Joe Scheidler, an Inspiration to all
Joe Scheidler and his family have been a continuing inspiration to pro life people. We, in California, have much for which to thank him as he continually returned to California to help train people in pro life work and in the use of the media.

Faith and the corporate cubicle!
Bravo, Marty! Thank yoou for this vert wise and profoundly simple and insightful challenge to raise the faith bar in the corporate cubicle!
Contraception: What did Pope Francis mean?
Though Pope Francis didn’t utter a word that would change the basic conclusions you draw from Humane Vitae regarding contraception, what he did say is just as important. He wants to get to the pastoral realm of leading the church, and move beyond the unrelenting sword of doctrine which alienates so many.
Do you recall his admonishment to his cardinals to smell like “sheep,” meaning go out and be among your faithful? In doing so, he expected priests would recognize life is not lived in the letter of law you so aptly quote in your article. Rather, as you know, life is uncovered in the day-to-day actions of imperfect people, none of whom live up to the rules.
Importantly, as Pope Francis recognized, no one can objectively label peoples’ actions. I believe he was concerned about those who feel alienated because many of the loud-mouthed conservatives in the fold, wrongfully and against the letter of the law, explicitly argue people are always in a state of mortal sin (meaning beyond the sanctifying grace of God) if one has used contraception. That ignorance has led many well- intentioned Catholics away from the Church on Sundays. Pope Francis, in his exhortation, identified all sorts of ameliorating factors which would exclude a person from being in a state of “mortal” sin. These factors included duress, economic, psychological, etc. It is this merciful position in his exhortation which gives the faithful some relief from the unrelenting, unmerciful, and theologically ignorant factions of the faithful who imbue every grave matter with a “mortal sin” label.
The uneducated faithful need to know three elements must be present for a sin to be mortal: (1) grave matter; (2) committed with full knowledge; and (3) committed with deliberate consent. The Pope is conceding in his words that contraception, while objectively involving a grave matter, is not automatically done with full knowledge and consent just because it was in fact used.
Food for thought.
End of life bill and who’s responsible for it
yes, Ultimately the pseudo .Catholic Governor, Brown, signed the bill, but it was renegade Republicans who delivered it to him. Danville Assemblywoman, Catharine Baker is claiming the Honora on that. She has stated to the mediate at it washer amendments that encouraged Republicans and reluctant Dems to vote “yes.”
her amendments do not protect the patient but they do protect the bill from any attempt to veto it and that was its purpose.
This is a wonderful interview
This is a wonderful interview with an obviously faith filled man. When asked about the role of faith in the financial industry, however, it would have been nice to see some mention of morally responsible investing. The Church, and American bishops in particular (USCCB), has been clear that moral choices are very relevant in the investment arena, including reasonable/prudent efforts, when possible, to avoid ownership of stocks that engage in immoral businesses, including by way of example, “entertainment” companies selling pornography, pharmaceutical companies that make contraceptives and companies that actively support abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.
This is a huge step in the direction of the mark of the beast, and the general enslavement by the Antichrist. Of course the control of the Internet will be connected to the United Nations, they are the ones promoting the Antichrist.
When the enslavement is done, people won’t even know they are enslaved until it’s spelled out to them (I speak in the future, but I’m not so sure I should).
Of course, who cares… as long as we can eat cake now, who cares what the enemy is doing… Besides, who doesn’t have a bank card with Flash?
A Possible DIS 24 hour news channel ?!?!
FIRST, this is the second time ABC will be attempting to create a 24 hour news channel. I believe it was the late 80’s early 90’s that ABC created an in-house cable news network, that basically, was ONLY VIEWED by the tape operators and maybe MOST of the control room. Apparently, you are too young to remember this, but most likely it’s been purged by the DISNEY ABC archives
For you to compare FOX’s success with a possible Disney ABC venture, like the same, is being disengenuous. There is NO ONE ON EARTH, or currently employed at DIS that has the business and Creative accumen, comparable to The Minds who came together for that SINGULAR, FOX creation.
QUESTION: IF THE LEFTIST ESPN IS HEMORAGING VIEWER & SUBSCRIBERS PRESENTLY, TO THE NUMBER OF 600K A MONTH, HOW DOES DIS even ‘spit ball’ and idea like a 24 hour Cable News channel ?
You at DIS will be facing a stockholder revolt, BIG TIME !
RULE ONE OF LIFE: You don’t touch or play with fallen, electrical wires.
RULE TWO OF LIFE: NEWS NEVER MAKES MONEY.

Great article – really picked me up!
I just read your article above. I found it really helpful. My situation at the moment is very similar, to the way yours was back then. I googled “saint for the unemployed”,because I am desperate at the moment. And your article was about the 10th result from the search.
Thank you for writing this, it has given me hope and I will start praying to St.Cajetan more often!!!
All the best,
Peace of Christ,
Tom, Thanks for another great review….given all the craziness going on in the world, this book is clearly timely, too.
Also, is it possible to have a kindle version option for the link to purchasing the book directly from your review?
Response: YES, use the link in the article to then search for Kindle version.
It is important in these times to stand up for religious freedom. Please consider becoming part of the Candle Project for Religious Freedom movement. This movement simply asks people to place at least one battery or electric candle in your home or business window(s) as a sign that you stand for religious freedom and an end to religious persecution around the world. It is a quiet, simple, and beautiful way to make a statement. If you’d like some free “candle cards” to hand out to help pass the word please e-mail email@example.com .

Re; A few questions
As an “athiest” born and raised catholic, possessing an IQ of 132, I suppose I am qualified to answer your questions. It is merely impossible in the least to know the answers to our human existance, yet by using logic we can comprehend what we can from past experiences and use them to propose hypotheses.
Although not believing in a biblical God, I infer there must be SOMETHING which created the big bang; be it a mere catalyst interacting with energy or otherwise.
1- Athiesm is less dogmatic than any form of religion because IT IS NOT A RELIGION. It is complete lack there of- no worship, expected benefits, etc. Simple
2- Personally, I have never used that phrase, so cant explain what others mean by that. :-1
3- Iq tests are based around logic; athiestic beliefs are usually conformed due to logic as well. Instead of having faith in the unknkown, We tent to question authority, which can turn out both positively or negatively sometimes.
I in know way possess infinite knowledge, I am a human just like the rest of us (a young one at that). If there is a God, be him omnipotent and judging, he should understand that using my brain to contemplate life and my spirituality is in no way “immoral”, therefore I should not be burned in hell for eternity. (Lol)

What a beautiful and touching article. As a native Texan, I’m very familiar with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, but it was only after converting to Catholicism in 2009 that I learned the origen of the image and the many miracles surrounding it.
“Proof of Heaven” the book.
“PROOF OF HEAVEN” – REVIEW of a Book by Eben Alexander. A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife – NDE
Eben’s exposé of his near-death experience does indeed seem to provide living proof of an afterlife. Heaven and Hell are ‘somewhat’ represented as the Bible portrays them, although Heaven is less glorious and Hell is less foreboding. Also, I’m not convinced that it was God that he was talking with. In the beginning, he did cry out “God help me”. But he was not a religious man, he rarely went to church. After his ordeal, upon his visit to church, a painting of Jesus and of The Last Supper did evoke feelings & memories of the bliss of heaven & of God’s unconditional love. He goes on to say “I didn’t just believe in God, I knew Him”. And tears streamed down his cheeks as he took communion. – This of course is deeply touching. However, there are many, many people who believe in God, even Satan & the fallen Angels knew & know God. But, we all know where they’re going to end up! Nowhere does Eben acknowledge Jesus, nor did Jesus acknowledge him. Eben completely bypasses Jesus’ torture, agony, & the death he suffered for our salvation! He, like most Jews, has never acknowledged Jesus as his Lord & Savior. God’s Word, John 14.6, is quite clear, “No-one comes to the Father except thru the Son”. Moreover, God would never have allowed His Son to go through what he did if it weren’t for a very good reason. “He gave his only begotten Son”! (John 3:16). Of course we do need to seek God, but in this Age of Grace, we don’t have the option of bypassing Jesus, God just won’t have it!
Eben so passionately wants to tell his story; he wants people to know that there really is an afterlife, that we do have an eternal spiritual self, and that God really does exist. He has the greatest of intentions, but in actuality he’s being used as a dupe by Satan. He’s taking part in a concerted effort by Satan to delude & give people a false sense of security. Because Eben is truly searching and wants others to experience God, he’s promoting all kinds of New Age type philosophies, books, & organizations that totally bypass Jesus and are in opposition to the Bible. Hemi-Sync, page 158, is one of these. Per Eben, Hemi-Sync is a powerful system to enhance deep conscious exploration based on an audio technology. Via enhanced states of consciousness it can supposedly allow access to alternate perceptual modes including deep meditation and mystical states, liberating ones out-of-body consciousness and ultimately allowing us to communicate & be one with God. The problem here is, when someone empties his rational mind, he leaves it wide open to access by deceiving spirits, “spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Eph. 6:12). There’s no doubt in my mind that Eben’s experience was orchestrated by Satan. If Eben were a believer, I think his experience would have been quite different.
A few other things worry me about Eben’s new found teachings. 1) He relates the story of a dead relative coming back to converse with someone. He also endorses the book “Personal Encounters with the Virgin Mary”. These types of encounters are similar to that of mediums, conjurings, channelings, etc., which encompass manifestations of evil spirits under Satan’s control. They are strictly forbidden and warned about in the Bible. 2) God told him there are many other universes, some whose intelligence is advanced far beyond that of ours. I’m guessing that this satanic lie will help Satan foster an alien/God type end-time scenario, possibly in conjunction with Antichrist. 3) Israel. Eben supposedly got his Black Plague type disease in Israel. I wouldn’t put it past Satan to throw this into the story just because he hates Israel so very much. 4) Eben was given the knowledge that we are all part of the Devine and that absolutely nothing can take that away; that nothing can tear us from God, ever! Again, completely against God’s Word; another lie to promote false hope & security.
I really do feel sorry for Eben. He is such a good, loving, & compassionate person. I feel confident that someday he will get to know Jesus, come to true faith, & find salvation. But right now, he’s totally helping Satan with his never-ending plan of deceit & deception. He’s leading so many in the wrong direction. What a shame! If only Eben had the Holy Spirit as his helper, which only happens when one is born of the Spirit, born-again, has truly accepted Jesus as their Lord & Savior. Only then is one even interested enough to really want to know God & His Ways. Unless the Holy Spirit has quickened our spirit, we remain blind to the things of God; our mind & spirit are open to all kinds of worldly or false teachings. And only with the Spirits help are we driven to and enabled to rightly interpret the Bible, the God Breathed (2Tim.3:16) instruction book for the believer. And the better we know His Word, the less likely we are to be deceived by evil spirits, false teachers, & false preachers. The Word of God is truly the only thing in this Satan controlled world that we can totally trust! If only Eben had been a partaker of the Word! If one is not interested in His Word, can there really be any true relationship?
Blame OCP, mainly.
I couldn’t agree more. Perhaps you’ve seen this article (vintage 2009) that gives a bit of insight into the “Liturgical Music Machine”:
Thank you for the work you do, and the moral clarity and courage you possess. Also thank you for this fantastic article.
Very good discussion. What needs to be added is the moral relativism that has accompanied the value shift that has occurred since the 1960s. We have evoled from an authority-centered society to a person-centered society. This shift has affected everything from how we raise our kids to what we believe. “Truth” is now defined by the individual — not by some outside authority.
Our Catholic population has been affected by this value shift and surveys show that half of them don’t believe in many of the Chuch’s major teachings, such as those regarding abortion, pre-marital sex, etc. We need to educate our Catholic brethren about our beliefs and why we believe what we do. A return to the philosophy, apologetics, and theology of former days seems to be in order.
Hello. I have two questions:
1. When did you write this article?
2. What is your source for the Schubert quote?
I’ve been trying to track it down and can not. I hope you can help me. Thank you.
Karen Walker was very accurate is her retelling of the horrible fires in Napa. My daughter and her family live in Napa, so needless to say, once she alerted me, I stayed up all night on my computer as people posted information. My daughter’s family had to eventually evacuate, but were one of the lucky ones to have had their home spared.
Rebuilding will be tough. How many years will it take? So many lives lost. So many homes, businesses and old vineyards burned to the ground. It was such a tragedy.

Well said, CBJ — you captured the man! You also captured the reason for our very existence, to get ourselves and all we touch to heaven, and to do so with joy. Thank you.
Thank You Karen
Thank you Karen for such a beautiful article, I am just now reading all of the articles that people have written. It is an amazing testament to a great man whom I called my Dad…
Amen! Your irrepressibly Catholic and enthusiastic, business savvy dad was truly an inspiration to me and to many!!
Fighting death with intellect
Thank you for the most perfect response to the abortion debate: <
“The one resource you cannot do without—the one resource that unlocks all other resources is the human mind. An abortion is the destruction of human intelligences, not just one or two, but millions of intelligences that would have been a benefit to their family, brought love into their family, love and health into their community and made society at large better. “
Public employee unions

I’m for labor unions, but have a real problem with public employee unions. There’s a “Catch-22” here, because public employees need some form of collective bargaining at times, but the power they exercise in the body politic has become a possibly terminal cancer in our society.
When they run their own candidates or push the election of others, they are cementing the status quo and bureaucratic inefficiency into the workings of the community and nation. See what a horrible price our children and wallets have paid for the power of the now well entrenched educational establishment!
One politician’s ad sneers that his opponent has a “0” National Education Association rating. That, for those of us who hate socialism from the core of our beings, is the highest praise one could reap on a candidate. For the rest of you, cry for your beloved country for what you are doing to it!

Response to Papal Infallibility and Birth Control for Difficult
Dear Mr. Bjornstrom,
Before I give personal assent and credence to your well written article, I will need to consult someone more versed in theology and canon law. It is obvious to me that you have done considerable research. I respect that.
However, at this time, I am not convinced. I am not married, and thus have no children. However, if my life had taken a different turn and I had been married, my perspective on contraception might be different.
While respecting Pope John VI’s position on the topic, I must say that I do not fully agree with him. He was never married. As far as I know, he never lived anywhere that had such a dangerous disease as Zika.
All popes are insulated from the real life problems that affect us. They don’t have to worry about such things as layoffs, student loans, unemployment and making a living wage. They don’t have to worry about providing for families.
When I go to meet Our Lord for a final accounting of my life, it will be a discussion between the two of us. There will not be a canon lawyer representing me. I will have to account for my life, by myself.
Finally, I want to reiterate that your article is well researched. It has prompted me to persist in prayer and more study at this time,
Spruce Margaret Lynch
