EDITORIAL: A Call to Action, to Profound Happiness

By Karen A. Walker

The odd timing of a few unanticipated deaths, a chance discussion with one of our radio hosts, and the inner reflections that come with colder weather and Advent readings has triggered a sense that now is a good time to announce our renewed commitment to more consistently adding another layer of depth and dimension to the Catholic Business Journal. For the sake of simplicity, I’ll call it encouragement to nurture “the inner life.”

Of course, as Catholics, we know the most profound interior relationship we can have is with Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, a sacrament so sublime that St. Thomas Aquinas refers to it as “the source and summit of our being.”

We also know, as Catholics, that every moment we spend before the Blessed Sacrament in Adoration, every time we frequent the sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation, and prayerfully participate in Mass, the supernatural graces we receive —many times unaware — spill over and influence every aspect of our daily lives — at home, at work, in the boardroom and in the trenches.

Christ transforms us.

We could shout it from the rooftops, but it would be as “tinkling brass,” to quote Scripture, unless we personally strived to live in Him ourselves… unless we chose to daily allow ourselves to die to self and live more fully in Him, even in the midst of our most stressful business demands and personal chaos.

It’s not a matter of feeling or emotion. It’s a matter of choice. Yearly. Monthly, Daily, even minute by minute. We as humans, as Catholics, can choose Christ in our darkest moments. And we’re more likely to do so if it has become our habit day after day, minute after minute, in season and out of season, regardless of who we are with or where we are on the corporate or entrepreneurial “ladder.”

At the Catholic Business Journal, you won’t see this renewed attentiveness to the inner life in preachy articles or in-your-face frustrations and grouses.

Instead, you’ll find it purposefully woven into real-life stories, examples, interviews. You’ll find it in the extra dimension or perspective we try to include with news. You’ll see it in articles and columns that challenge us and inspire us.

Life is short.  Let us help you live it better this week… and next… and
